In 1951, Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese-American artist and designer, created Akari Light Sculptures as part of his art work series. These sculptures are hand-crafted with washi paper and bamboo, with over 100 lamps in all sizes and price ranges. Akari is the Japanese word for light and clarity. Each lamp is made in the Ozeki workshop, managed by a traditional Japanese family in Gifu. The unique designs and special expression of these lamps has earned them a place in the hearts of design lovers all around the world. The paper lanterns offer a harmonious mix of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and modernist shapes, lighting up a beautiful and diffused light.
