In 1951, Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese-American sculptor-designer, created the Akari Light Sculptures, a hand-crafted art series with over 100 table, floor and ceiling lights made from washi paper and bamboo. Deriving its name from the Japanese for light and clarity, each Akari is painstakingly made in the Ozeki workshop, a traditional family business in Gifu. Now iconic around the world, the paper lanterns are renowned for their unique and unexpected charm. Combining classic Japanese craftsmanship with modern design, Akari lamps provide a soft and diffused light of exceptional quality.
